One comment I heard over and over at Comic Con is, do you have an 11x17" scanner?  While I have been doing graphic design work for 24 years and I know how to combine scans, I didn't have an 11x17" scanner.  Yesterday, I bought one and I am in love.  Talk about a time saver.

I broke the story down into a theme for each page:  Page 1 - Murder, Page 2 - Clean Up, Page 3 - Burial.  I explored several different ways of telling this story and this page is definitely my favorite.  In some ways it reminds me of Gene Day's work, it really shows the progression of time.

I created my pencling portfolio with the idea that I would also self publish this in the future.  If I didn't land a job at SDCC, I would then have a story that could be used in an anthology.  I miss the old EC horror comics like Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear.  Considering the different types of readers comics are attracting these days, I see this as a really untapped market.  All rights reserved.

As many of you know Comic Con was a couple of weeks ago and it was blast!

Highlights from SDCC 2014:

-  Took a penciling portfolio to the con and was able to get it reviewed six times and received positive remarks from everyone!  Got three business cards and two email contacts!  If you plan on taking a penciling portfolio, be sure to show tight sequentials.  Pin up art will get you nowhere.

-  Met Guillermo del Toro!  FX had a scavenger hunt and if you collected three wrist bands you were given VIP access.  Got a pic with him, autograph, bunch of swag but some even better memories.  We were treated to a special screening of The Strain at a theatre downtown which was completely redecorated for the event.  When you walked in a statue of The Master greeted you and there were various props from the show:  The Master's coffin, the beating heart in a jar, Setrakian's cane/sword, and the head of a decapitated vampire.  Before the screening, The Master appeared all twitching and flickering before disappearing in a flash of light.  Really well done sfx.  Free popcorn and drinks, you can't go wrong!  Met Mike Huddleston there who is one of my favorite artists.

-  Kicked off the con by meeting up with some friends of CCI for breakfast on Wednesday at the Broken Yolk.  Great place to eat.  You almost have to go with friends now to SDCC.  The lines are crazy!  Having friends snag exclusives and then paying them back via PayPal will save you a bunch of time.  The line to get into the convention center on Saturday wrapped around the Hall H line!

-  Being interviewed by Showtime for Penny Dreadful.  While waiting in line for B20, Showtime's camera crew was asking if anyone was a fan of the show.  Most people were in line for B20 to see Hannibal and Teen Wolf except for me, I was one of the few Dreadfuls.  They asked several questions, we'll see if I show up on their website.

-  Played Alien Isolation in a giant Alien cocoon.  This game looks and plays fantastic.  Great experience.

Comic Con was exhausting this year but immensely fun.  You practically need a 4 day badge to get anything done.  Lines for the exhibit floor are forming at 11pm the night before, which is just insane.  Everyone wants exclusives.  Here's a Comic Con secret:  exhibitors are already buying exclusives before the doors open to the public.  So all that waiting in line barely does any good.  I found this little secret out when an exhibitor who liked my portfolio gave me a Booth Prep sticker which allowed me early floor access and I saw exhibitors buying and marking up exclusives.  Funko was really busy before 9am.  Even lines for Hall H were forming at 11am the day before!  It will be interesting to see how Comic Con deals with the lines for next year.  They're already implementing raffles for autographs which will probably spread elsewhere.  Next year, I want my badge to read PROFESSIONAL.  If you have any questions about Comic Con feel free to ask.

Thank you. Thank you. I'll be here all year. You wouldn't happen to be at Comic Con this year would you? Your GPK sketch covers are astounding!

Thanks, not going to SDCC because it's too expensive to be worth the trip unless someone has me at their booth. Closest thing to west coast would be Phoenix Comicon that I did this year, and will most likely be doing again next year. Was thinking of NYCC, but not sure if I'll make it.

That's a bummer. How much do you charge for a GPK comic book cover?
